Trophee des Sables

Le Gurp beach and BayDuring the winter the Gurp opens up for a weekend at the end of January with the 3 hour Gurp TT beach race that is part of the French Trophee des Sables (French cup of motorbike beach racing). Its an enduro event for motorbikes with a 12 km circuit which is renowned to be the hardest beach race in France, a 6 km beach run starts the course before crossing the dunes of the Atlantic Coast and heading into the Medoc pine forest, where the sand continues to sap the power from the two and four stroke engines of the 200 - 250 motor bikes which compete in the Gurp TT event.

At the event you will also find a 4x4 salon showing off the latest equipment, for quads, off road and more where you can buy the hottest clothing and extras for your motorbike or quad. If you need a place to stay, the Gurp Campsite (tel: 05 56 09 44 53) is open for the weekend, but if you are looking for hotel accommodation book early as places are limited at this time of the year in the Medoc. Otherwise the village of Grayan has over 20 country gites or bed and breakfasts that can easily be booked through the tourist office (tel: 05 56 09 43 01).
