Saint Emilion found in the south west of France to the east of Bordeaux, dates back back to prehistoric times. The structure of the limestone plateau giving prehistoric man ideal security off the flood plains of the river Dordogne.

Drive out of Libourne on the D 670 direction Castillon-la-Bataille before taking the D122 climbing the hill to Saint Emilion.

Today the medieval town centre with it's Chateau du Roy, towers, underground church and fortified gates has lots to offer for a day tour. .

The Saint Emilion produces some of the finest wines in the world and around the medieval town you will find wine estates covering the the landscape home of the wines of Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion and Lussac-Saint-Emilion.

Château Franc Mayne (www.chateaufrancmayne.com) situated to the north west is a great visit, the vineyard, the winery,the 2 hectares of underground cellars and the wine tasting are where you can enjoy a Grand Cru Classé ( one of 47 chateaux) a little bit of the main tourist road (you must book for a tour) . If you want a top place to stay the Château has a collection of rooms with fantastic views over the vineyards.
